AEIS Score Requirements Explained: What the Cambridge Benchmarks Actually Mean for Your Child

Ask five different AEIS prep providers what score your child needs, and you may get five different answers - often because the question itself is more complicated than it looks. AEIS isn't graded the same way at every level. Here's what's actually being measured, level by level, and what it means for how you should prepare.

Why AEIS Primary levels are benchmarked against Cambridge exams

For Primary 2 to Primary 5 candidates, AEIS English proficiency is assessed against a recognised external standard: Cambridge English Qualifications. This gives MOE a consistent, internationally validated way to measure English ability across applicants from very different school systems. It also means your child's readiness can be checked against a known, well-documented benchmark - rather than a vague sense of "their English is pretty good."

AEIS Primary 2, 3 and 4: Cambridge A2 Key for Schools

Candidates applying for Primary 2 through Primary 4 are benchmarked against the Cambridge A2 Key for Schools exam, with the bar rising as the target grade rises:

• Primary 2: at least 120 out of 150

• Primary 3: at least 130 out of 150

• Primary 4: at least 140 out of 150

Notice that Primary 4 sits right at the top of the A2 Key range - closer to where a child would be expected to be transitioning into B1-level English. That makes Primary 4 candidates, in practice, held to a noticeably higher standard than Primary 2 candidates, even though both are nominally taking "the A2 exam."

AEIS Primary 5: Cambridge B1 Preliminary for Schools

Primary 5 candidates step up to the more advanced Cambridge B1 Preliminary for Schools, needing at least 140 out of 160. B1 Preliminary expects more complex sentence structures, broader vocabulary, and stronger independent writing than A2 Key - which is one reason Primary 5 candidates often need a different style of preparation, not just "more of the same."

AEIS Secondary 1 to 3: MOE syllabus only, no Cambridge component

Here's where it changes completely. Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 candidates are assessed purely against the Singapore MOE syllabus for English and Maths - there's no Cambridge benchmark at all. Instead, the exam mirrors the format of a real MOE assessment: composition writing, grammar, vocabulary, cloze passages and comprehension for English; multiple-choice, short-answer and open-ended questions for Maths.

This means Secondary-level preparation should look and feel like an MOE classroom assessment, not a Cambridge English course - a distinction that's easy to miss if you're using generic international-English materials to prepare.

AEIS Maths: always benchmarked one level below

Across every grade, AEIS Maths follows the same rule: candidates are expected to be familiar with the MOE Maths syllabus one level below their target grade. A Primary 4 AEIS candidate needs Primary 3 Maths. A Secondary 2 AEIS candidate needs Secondary 1 Maths. This gives new students a working foundation to build on once they're actually in the classroom, rather than expecting them to already be at the exact level of their future peers.
